Roe v Wade: A letter from the CEO of a major US sporting goods company promising to pay for the travel expenses of any employees who need to have an abortion goes viral

A 50-year-old ruling guaranteeing abortion access across the United States was overturned by the US Supreme Court, and now Dick's Sporting Goods is getting praise online for promising assistance to employees

The Supreme Court of the United States

The Supreme Court of the United States struck down the country's abortion laws in a devastating decision. A sports company's announcement to pay for employees' travel expenses to have abortions in another state has gone viral as people discuss the impact and consequences of the Supreme Court's decision.

Six votes to three, the US Supreme Court on Friday overturned a historic ruling from 50 years ago that guaranteed access to abortion in the United States. As protests erupted across the country and the world, others wondered how mothers in need could obtain the necessary procedure. Lauren Hobart, CEO of Dick's Sporting Goods, announced the news on her LinkedIn page. The letter soon went viral on other platforms, gaining praise from the internet community.

There will be teammates and athletes who do not agree with this decision, and we understand that there are strong feelings on both sides." Health and family-related decisions are deeply personal and should be handled with care, as Hobart wrote in his letter. When it comes to health care, "we are making this decision so that our teammates can access the same health care options, regardless of where they live, and choose what is best for them," Hobart said.

Employees across the United States who need to travel to a different state for abortion access will be reimbursed up to $4,000 by the company. Employees, spouses, and dependents enrolled in Hobart's medical plan will be eligible for the benefit, the company announced. Traveling with an additional support person is also an option.

"We are ready to ensure that all of our teammates have consistent and safe access to the benefits we provide, regardless of the state in which they live," Hobart said.

People all over the internet were talking about the company's viral post, including Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf

Some applauded the decision made by Hobart, but they also tagged other organisations in the hopes that they, too, would follow suit. Netizens expressed interest in purchasing her company's products as a result of this.

For financial reasons, Market Watch reports that the kind gesture had a positive impact on the company. DKS, +8.40 percent shares shot up 9.6 percent in midday trading on Friday, according to the report, and their stock's rally "outperformed its retail peers and the broader stock market by a wide margin," according to the report.

Fortunately, a number of other well-known brands and corporations have also come out in favour of the cause. More than a dozen companies have agreed to pay for abortion travel costs following the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
